Hype Machine Zeitgeist and HEALTH
I was excited to read Fred Wilson’s post today about music and entertainment culture and the ways in which this culture is defined. He asserts that Hype Machine is actually the Rolling Stone of today’s modern world, and I agree whole-heartedly. Today’s cultural tastes are less influenced by hired “experts” than they were in the past due to the explosion of innovations like blogging and social taggging/ranking. We all know it - you and I are now influencers.
Hype Machine has a fantastic new feature - the Zeitgeist - that aggregates and organizes past data from the participatory blogosphere, helping users sift through current or recent popular great songs, albums, and artists. I think the feature is a nice improvement on a site I otherwise used to search to listen to songs.
Now the interesting point… Andrew Miller’s brother BJ is in a band - Health - and they had a song that made it to the top 50 in 2008. That’s right - top 50 of all of the songs we blogged about and that Hype Machine aggregated. The catch? Crystal Castles covered their song - so they don’t get the immediate name recognition. However, I’m sure this will bring them some more serious street cred in the music business.
By the way BJ - your drums are killer on this track. Nice work.
