Five years from now the internet will be dominated by Chinese-language content.

  • Today’s teenagers are the model of how the web will work in five years - they jump from app to app to app seamlessly.

  • Five years is a factor of ten in Moore’s Law, meaning that computers will be capable of far more by that time than they are today.

  • Within five years there will be broadband well above 100MB in performance - and distribution distinctions between TV, radio and the web will go away.

  • “We’re starting to make signifigant money off of Youtube”, content will move towards more video.

  • “Real time information is just as valuable as all the other information, we want it included in our search results.”

  • There are many companies beyond Twitter and Facebook doing real time.

  • “We can index real-time info now - but how do we rank it?”

  • It’s because of this fundamental shift towards user-generated information that people will listen more to other people than to traditional sources. Learning how to rank that “is the great challenge of the age.” Schmidt believes Google can solve that problem.

I always forgot that Google’s stated goal is to organize the world’s information. With its seemingly mad quest to gather inordinate amounts of diverse information, I overlook the ranking portion.  It’s the great challenge of the age — I like that; make my information easier, faster, and more relevant.

Overall, the study confirms much of what we mostly already knew (or in many cases, took for granted): social media influences consumer intent and search behavior. Of course, most types of media influence consumer intent and search behavior.

The study provides some interesting data points:

  • Consumers exposed to a brand’s influenced social media and paid search are 2.8x more likely to search for that brand’s products

  • There was a 50% CTR increase in paid search when consumers were exposed to both influenced social media and paid search

  • In organic search, consumers searching on brand product terms who have been exposed to a brand’s social marketing campaign are 2.4 times more likely to click on organic links leading to the advertiser’s site than the average user seeing a brand’s paid search ad alone

Merle's Door

Just finished reading Merle’s Door, a book about a dog who was able to live without a fence, collar, or leash out in the Grand Tetons.   At it’s essence, the story is an experiment in letting a dog live the way it wants to live.

Though I could do without the excessive anthropomorphizing, the book actually changed my perspective somewhat on dog intelligence.  The author does a great job of combining an interesting storyline with all sorts of facts and research on human evolution, wolf studies, and animal psychology.

Highly recommended if you’re a dog person.

Who knew there was a weekly log of viral “ads”?   Great site, and some very interesting ads (or faux ads if you count the FunnyorDie.com Insurance ad).
